LEILANI HAS A SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO SHORT TRACK RACING
Schererville, Indiana (April 22, 2006)
After a three year hiatus from short track racing, Leilani Münter made a successful return to short track racing at Illiana Speedway on Saturday
night. With her new SS Racing team behind her, Leilani finished 7th in her heat race. For the main event, she qualified 14th and finished 12th on the lead lap and closing quickly on several cars.
"For my first short track race in years, I am really happy with the results tonight," said Münter, "After a full week of testing last week, I was
quickly reminded that short track racing is much more physically
and mentally demanding of a driver than the larger 1.5 mile speedways that my last couple races were on."
"I know my team gave me a car capable of better than 12th," said Münter, "I was closing in fast on a group of cars at the end but I ran out of time,
I'll just have to get them next week."
"Special thanks to Butch Miller, Deon Deneau, Zach Niessner, and Ken Smith
for all their support. I know I have a lot to learn from these guys and I feel really lucky to have such a great team with me this season," added Münter.
This is the first race of an intense 30 race schedule planned for Münter's 2006 driver development program with SS Racing. It’s been over 3 years since
Munter's last short track race. The teams focus for the first racing event was simply to finish and build a solid foundation to a long season ahead.
The schedule includes a combination of several series including ASA North, ASA South, ASA Challenge, USRA Super Late Models, and the NASCAR Elite Division.
Crew Chief Deon Deneau was also pleased with Munter’s initial performance. “We’re taking things one step at a time,” said Deneau. “It’s a process and she
did a good job of qualifying in the race and maintaining a solid clean finish.
Munter will compete again at Illiana Speedway this Saturday night.
